General guidance

• The addition of alginates to antacids can be useful as protectants and rafting agents.
• These agents provide rapid relief from occasional symptoms of reflux disease and provide a valuable first line treatment, especially if symptoms are occasional and intermittent.
• Many of these agents are available over-the-counter from community pharmacies.
