8.1 Cytotoxic drugs

General Guidance
 

• Methotrexate should be prescribed in the community on the recommendation of a consultant rheumatologist.
• Changes to the dosage of methotrexate should only be made by consultant rheumatologists.
• Methotrexate should be administered only once per week, it is never used daily.
• This drug requires regular specific monitoring in order to reduce toxicity – such monitoring is mandatory.
