4.11 Drugs for dementia

All drugs for dementia will have first been initiated by Consultant at Dudley and Walsall Mental Health Partnership Trust within NICE guidance (NICE TA 217).  Where it is felt appropriate for prescribing to be transferred to primary care the patient's GP will have been contacted and invited to work within locally agreed shared care protocol.

Recommended drugs

1st Line - Donepezil 

Galantamine

Rivastigmine

Memantine - for people who cannot take AChE inhibitors and as an option for managing severe disease

All prescribing of drugs for dementia should be generic as above.

 

Drug Traffic Light Key:

Green – On Formulary

Amber – Restricted use, see local guidelines      

Purple – Specialist use/initiation

Red – Non Formulary
